NDIS funds can be managed in three primary ways: self-management, plan management, and NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) management. Each method offers different levels of control and responsibility for the participant. In self-management, participants have full control over their NDIS funds, allowing them to choose and pay for their services directly. This option provides the greatest flexibility, as participants can select providers who are not registered with the NDIS and negotiate service prices. However, self-managing requires participants to handle all the administrative tasks, including record-keeping, paying invoices, and ensuring compliance with NDIS guidelines.
Plan management offers a middle ground, where participants have the freedom to choose providers, including those who are unregistered, but delegate the financial administration to a Plan Manager. The Plan Manager is responsible for processing payments, managing the budget, and providing financial reports, making it easier for participants to focus on their supports without the burden of paperwork. NDIA management, also known as agency management, involves the NDIA directly managing the participant's funds. In this case, participants can only use registered NDIS providers, and the NDIA handles all payments and financial administration. This option is often preferred by those who want minimal involvement in the financial aspects of their NDIS plan. Each funding management method has its advantages, and the choice depends on the participant’s preference for control, flexibility, and administrative involvement.
